While a home daycare can be started with very little initial investment, you will need access to some funding if you are to get started off properly. Let's look at some of the child care center funding options that are open to you if you want to get started in this rewarding and potentially lucrative industry.

The Independent Route

Firstly, you should try to avoid going into debt right away. If possible, fund your child care business independently (through your own funding or family funding) and reserve your access to credit. Things may not go as well as planned during your first six months in business and you may need to seek external funding to tide you over if your business is growing at a rate that is slower than expected. Funding your own venture is the course of action that is most recommended although for many it is just not possible and they do have to look for outside financing or investors for at least part of their child care center startup up costs.

Funding from Partners or Investors

If there are no close friends or relatives lining up to lend you money you may be able to find an investor or partner among your wider circle of associates. In return for their funding you could give them an equity stake and some degree of influence and control over the child care center depending on how involved they wanted to be. Venture capital firms can find these kinds of investors for you but they are usually only concerned with larger startups.

Commercial Bank Financing

Most commercial banks offer small business loans with varying interest rates and varying repayment schedules. Have a solid business plan that you can take to them and make sure that you are prepared to prove to them that you have sufficient funding to cover at least part of the set up costs. It is likely that you will need some kind of collateral that you can sign over to the bank to give them a guarantee that they will be paid back. Having a good account history with the bank in question can also help to secure financing.

Government Grants and Small Business Loans

Various government agencies offer small business loans or even grants that don't have to be repaid at all. The problem here though is that many other entrepreneurs are chasing these limited opportunities so if you want to have any chance of success you have to have a worthy application that outlines not only your business plan but also what your business will do to help your community.

Even though child centers are a unique business model in terms of the service that they provide to families it is still difficult to qualify for any type of government funding unless you are a non-profit. Some states do more than others to provide assistance such as helping you to access credit quicker and at more affordable interest rates.

Credit Card Funding

As a last resort, if all else fails you can simply get some cash advances on a variety of credit cards. Beware though as this method is dangerous due to the high interest rates involved and should only be done if you are confident that your business will grow fast enough to allow you to start making sizable repayments within a few months.

Whatever financing method you use you should make sure that you won't be handing any of the control of your business over to your financiers unless you are perfectly happy with the arrangement. Whether you fund your child care center yourself or through some form of external financing, make sure that you are putting these funds to the best possible use, in a way that allows you to be successful and achieve a high return.

By: Sienna Brown

About the Guest Author:

One of the leading factors that will contribute to your success or failure when you start a child care center is marketing. In order to win customers and grow into a larger business with more than one facility or just to maintain your existing group sizes you need a solid marketing strategy in place.

Here is an outline of a child care center business plan to guide you.

Identifying a Hungry Market

The first step in putting a child care center marketing plan together is to identify your market. This may seem obvious at first but there are many niches or sectors in this industry. These range from infant care, regular child care for preschoolers, after school care, weekend and evening care. The niches vary by the age of the children, location, what time the children are there and also increasingly by the quality and style of care, facilities and educational program.

The most successful operators identify a niche that is not being catered to sufficiently in their local area and they move into and dominate the market. Doing extensive market research for your childcare business and working on differentiating yourself from competitors are the keys here.

Packaging and Pricing Child Care Services

Once you have defined your niche you can then look at clearly defining the services that you offer to meet niche demands and you can look at ways of packaging your services in a way that appears to enhance their value. While still being flexible in what you offer you can put together attractive packages with catchy names such as 'Saturday Koala Club' for example. List what is included with each package and offer discounts for customers signing up for a full package (clients who prepay for every Saturday for three months in advance get 10% discount for example).

It is also important to do research into child care pricing so that you can come up with rates that make your business marketable.

Branding

By now you should have a fair idea about the child care brand that you will be establishing. Give some thought to thinking about how you want the public to perceive your business and note down a company philosophy and the values that you want to project to the community. Then you can meet with a graphic designer and start discussing how to visually represent the brand that you want to create with a logo design.

Child care Center Advertising and Promotion

The next step is to get word out about your new child care center and the services and packages that you offer. Advertising is an important part of any marketing plan and you should look at the many options available and start running some campaigns several months before opening for business.

Networking and Cross Promotions

Advertising is not the only way to go about attracting clients. You should look at ways of cross promoting your services with other local business and network in your local community to meet a wide range of people.

Don't write off working together with competitors to cross promote each other's services respectively. If you get an enquiry and find out that the child in question would be better suited to a program at another daycare then you are doing the parents a favor by letting them know. And if the other daycare center is also referring children that they feel are more suited to what you have to offer then this arrangement is a win win for all involved.

Word of Mouth Marketing

If you serve your existing customers well they will refer friends to you. This kind of 'word of mouth' advertising is free and can be fully exploited by giving your clients every reason to talk about you to their friends. Providing a great service is one thing but there are many other ways to get customers talking about you. Make their interaction with your business so unique, interesting and memorable that they can't wait to bring your center up in a conversation with their friends.

Refining a Sales Process

If your advertising and networking efforts are successful you should start to receive a good number of enquiries from families. At this point you need to have developed an effective sales process right through from making the appointment, the interview session, a tour, some soft selling and then closure of the deal.

Don't Stop Marketing to your Customers

Keep marketing to your existing customers even after they have signed up with your service. There are always additional products and services that you can sell to maximize the revenue that you make off each client.

Many small centers spend too much time focusing on the day-to-day work of running their business and neglect their marketing. To make your child care business a success you need to ensure that you, as the owner, or another trusted staff member can devote a large part of their day towards marketing. This will ultimately help to determine how successful and profitable your business will be.

By: Sienna Brown

About the Guest Author:

There is a lot of discussion going on about starting a daycare business and that makes people think, 'What's so great about this opportunity that everyone's talking about it?' But, believe me, people who talk about the benefits of starting a day care business do not know even half the reasons why this is an unbeatable business opportunity. Let me tell you what I know.

Low overheads and initial investment

With the daycare business, you can play as low as you want. If you want, you can spend hundreds of dollars as your investment, but by planning meticulously, you can set up the whole business within a thousand dollars. You can even run your childcare business from your home, so that significantly slashes your initial investment and also the overheads. What's more, you can show your business expenses as tax-deductibles, so that means more effective savings. Governments help with the investment too, you have a lot of grant opportunities here. Every way you look at it, the daycare business becomes a very economical business start out with.

Minimum qualifications and work

You do not need to be qualified very high to run a home business. If you have a license, you might not need to have any special educational qualification at all. What's important is that you must know how to handle kids. And that is quite a natural thing for most people to know. Your duties are restricted too, you only have to be yourself with the kids and occupy their times in a constructive manner. Think about it, no deadlines, no bosses to answer to, no office rivalries it does seem to be a very grand profession. And believe me, it is!

Doing what you enjoy most

Who doesn't like to be with kids! Starting child care business means that you can do this all the time, and get paid handsomely for that too. Quite an attractive incentive, isn't it? You can relive your childhood with these kids, teach them how to make buildings from Lego blocks, help them stack their toys, teach them to draw and paint, sing and play with them. There are so many enjoyable things. In fact, it is true to say that with a kids business, you get paid for playing.

Earning love and respect

Most kids tend to love and respect their daycare people, and they continue these feelings even after they are grown up. How wonderful you will feel, several years down the line, when a freckle-faced teenager will walk up to you when you are buying vegetables, and say, "Hey, Mrs. Malcolm, remember me? I'm Hank. I was in your daycare. I really remember you still!" That will surely be worth all the years you put into your home business. Trust me that really happen with daycare owners.

By: Sean Tan

About the Author:
