So, you think you’d like to start a day care or some form of child care service but where to start? Let’s assume you know nothing about the child care industry except that it involves children!!! That’s pretty much the position I was in when I started my day care 10 years ago and I spent a year and a half researching and learning within the child care world including day care centers and home day cares before I got going. Before you go running for the hills in dismay allow me to cut short the research time a little with some pointers on how best to prepare for the exciting adventure that is ‘Starting a daycare business’.

Every successful venture starts with a well thought out business plan thus enabling the entrepreneur (you) to get a clear, overall picture of what your child care business will entail. This is the vital, unavoidable first step if you are to have any chance of understanding what it takes for your day care idea to succeed. Many people get to the business plan stage of their day care and no further due to a realisation that a child care project is

unfeasible for whatever reason. So, use your day care business plan as the first step in your research to figure out if your child care business will be viable.

Introduction/description,benefits, market research, key financials and conclusion. These are the vital elements of starting any business and are covered by your day care business plan. I found it to be a great ‘checklist’ of things to do towards starting my child care business as I worked my way methodically through each of the required steps. Areas I might have omitted or glossed over were covered leaving me with thorough and accurate vision of my day care business. Like a good teacher it provided the questions and ensured I filled in the blanks. Business plan templates abound but here a few that I quite like.

www.sba.gov USA

www.bytestart.co.uk UK

www.teagasc.ie/startingyourownbusiness/template.htm Ireland

Next, talk to the day care experts. Arrange a meeting with your local child care licensing representative, have them visit your potential day care premises and find out what they will be requiring in terms of premises layout, contents, child care play area and general day care health and safety issues. Get them to give you guidelines and tips on day care policies and child care business paperwork. Don’t be afraid to ask

questions – remember this is the child care expert, the person who will be granting you a day care license so best to have a heads up on what they will expect from you. Prepare in advance of this meeting and come armed with a list of comprehensive questions so you don’t waste a great opportunity to absorb as much child care knowledge as possible.

When I was researching my day care business I received some of the best tips, hints and advice from other child care providers, in fact, I still make ‘day care information gathering visits’ once a year and learn something new everytime from my child care counterparts. Existing daycare owners are an invaluable resource for practical child care advice. Call up a couple of established day care providers (preferably not too close to your proposed child care venture – they might not be too enamoured of the impending competition!), explain your situation, desire to start a child care service and set up a day to go visit. People are usually delighted to help aspiring entrepreneurs and love discussing their own day care business. There is nothing quitelike the advice of people who are on the ground, operating successful daycares and doing the day to day child care business.

Bring a clipboard and pen so you can jot down child care related notes and ideas before they vacate your head (as they do mine). Ask questions of the day care workers, listen and observe. Notice daily child care routines, day care room layout and child care equipment, methods for dealing with behaviours, day care staff and child interaction, health and safety procedures, day care hygiene practices, peruse child care paperwork (ask for copies of the paperwork to help guide you when formulating your own day care versions). Find about the best methods of advertising, what suppliers you should use for day care products and the range of child care fees locally. Try to speak with the day care owner or manager, the child care staff and the cook and get a

feel for each unique role. Don't just ask them what they do at the day care but also ask for their opinion on how things could be better. You will gain an immense wealth of practical child care knowledge simply by asking these open questions.

These are just three steps you can take in pursuit of your dream to start a day care business and they will provide you with a tremendous amount of information and guidance on all things child care. Your confidence in yourself and your ability to achieve your day care vision will peak and you will be propelled into further positive action towards your child care service. It costs nothing but time and if you can get yourself to this point there’s no looking back. What are you waiting for? Your day care business awaits.

By: Fiona Lohrenz

About the Author:

Whether you are starting a daycare because you enjoy spending time with kids or because you want to get into a wonderfully profitable business opportunity, you will need to employ some people to help you out. Yes, it is true that the child business is extremely profitable, because with both parents working in most houses, it becomes extremely important to enroll their kids in a daycare.

Parents would select daycare centers that are close to their homes, or on the way to their offices, so that they can easily drop and pick up the kids when they are en route to their workplace. But, even for the chidcare operators, such as you, this can be a very exciting experience, you get to spend time with some angelic kids and get good money for that too! Of course, there are responsibilities of handling the kids and keeping them engaged, but I would say that is better than most of the jobs on the planet.

Let's talk about the staffing issues now. When starter kits, you cannot avoid hiring a few people as your staff members. Selecting them is important, because you will be entrusting to their care some very impressible children. Look into the following points:

1. Actually speaking, whether a person has experience or not in the day care kids business doesn't really matter that much, because all humans have an inherent tendency of looking after kids. But what is more important is the past history of the person. Do not hire anyone without performing some background checks on them. Ask for references, and double-check them.

2. Start with short term contracts with your staff members, because you need to look into their methods of working. But, it is better to sign a long term contract as soon as possible, as the kids in the home business get used to people soon and don't like changes. Changing staff continually will make kids and their parents worried. It is advisable to make long period contracts with people whom you have probated for a while.

3. Clearly explain the way your childcare operates to all new recruits, at the very start. The rules and regulation of your daycare, their job timings, and modes of payment everything should be made clear to them. This prevents a lot of uneasiness later on.

It is advisable to advertise your starter kit only after you have your staff in place. That makes your business much more credible. When people have meetings with you about whether to use your daycare or not, they will definitely ask about your staff. In fact, that is an indicator of how important a good staff is to your child center.

By: Sean Tan

About the Author:

Many stay at home moms think that if they start a daycare business from their home, they will earn some extra money and be able to stay at home with their kids. This type of business is very rewarding and has many perks, however, when you work for someone else taking care of kids verses having your own home daycare you will find that there are several different distinctions.

When Will You Start Seeing a Profit

Running a daycare from your own home is profitable, however, it can also take from six to eighteen months before Wahms will see sufficient income coming in.

There are several reasons for this: Each state has different childcare licensing requirements. Just to get your license to run a home daycare you may need to have your home inspected, attend special classes, and pass certification. During this time, you may want to consider unlicensed childcare for just a couple of children, so that you can start building your home business. Unlicensed childcare also has rules in each state.

Do take the appropriate steps to get licensed though, this way you can increase your credibility among the parents and it will make it easier for you to get the necessary funding for your daycare.

Start Up Costs for Your Business

You will likely have some toys and other child and baby items from your own children, there will be many other things you will need to purchase to make your home into a daycare. Some of the things you will need for the daycare children are; art supplies, tables and chairs, music CD's, games and other activities.

The Time it Takes to Build Your List of Children

Lastly, it will take some time before you have a decent list of the children who will attend your daycare. In most towns there are several home daycares to choose from. If a parent finds one that they like, they usually stay there for the duration. It can be difficult to find new clients, especially if you do not take babies.

When you are licensed, it is definitely easier to get clients, but in the beginning you will need to do some networking with friends, parenting groups, people in your community and people at your church so that you can build a lucrative business.

Benefits of Having Your Own Home Daycare

There are a number of benefits to looking after other people's children. Your own children are not without playmates, you will get access to some fun and stimulating programs only available to daycare business owners. For example, you can get a discount on most supplies. You could even be entitled to federal subsidies for diapers and food for your cares.

Read up on home daycares to find out if owning one is right for you. Take a visit to other home daycares; ask these moms how they are enjoyable and convenient their business is. Find out the regulations in your state concerning licensed and unlicensed daycare. You'll know if owning a home daycare is right for you once you have done your homework.

By: Connie Kalincak

About the Author:

There is a lot of discussion going on about starting a daycare business and that makes people think, 'What's so great about this opportunity that everyone's talking about it?' But, believe me, people who talk about the benefits of starting a day care business do not know even half the reasons why this is an unbeatable business opportunity. Let me tell you what I know.

Low overheads and initial investment

With the daycare business, you can play as low as you want. If you want, you can spend hundreds of dollars as your investment, but by planning meticulously, you can set up the whole business within a thousand dollars. You can even run your childcare business from your home, so that significantly slashes your initial investment and also the overheads. What's more, you can show your business expenses as tax-deductibles, so that means more effective savings. Governments help with the investment too, you have a lot of grant opportunities here. Every way you look at it, the daycare business becomes a very economical business start out with.

Minimum qualifications and work

You do not need to be qualified very high to run a home business. If you have a license, you might not need to have any special educational qualification at all. What's important is that you must know how to handle kids. And that is quite a natural thing for most people to know. Your duties are restricted too, you only have to be yourself with the kids and occupy their times in a constructive manner. Think about it, no deadlines, no bosses to answer to, no office rivalries it does seem to be a very grand profession. And believe me, it is!

Doing what you enjoy most

Who doesn't like to be with kids! Starting child care business means that you can do this all the time, and get paid handsomely for that too. Quite an attractive incentive, isn't it? You can relive your childhood with these kids, teach them how to make buildings from Lego blocks, help them stack their toys, teach them to draw and paint, sing and play with them. There are so many enjoyable things. In fact, it is true to say that with a kids business, you get paid for playing.

Earning love and respect

Most kids tend to love and respect their daycare people, and they continue these feelings even after they are grown up. How wonderful you will feel, several years down the line, when a freckle-faced teenager will walk up to you when you are buying vegetables, and say, "Hey, Mrs. Malcolm, remember me? I'm Hank. I was in your daycare. I really remember you still!" That will surely be worth all the years you put into your home business. Trust me that really happen with daycare owners.

By: Sean Tan

About the Author:

For most work at home mothers, one of the main reasons they opt to work at home is to earn extra income while not sacrificing any quality time with their children. The ideal scenario is to be able to perform your motherly duties every single minute of the day while your bank account increases healthily due to your business profits. However, realistically, it is impossible to be a hands on Mum 24 hours a day, seven days a week, when you are also running a home based business. There comes a time or two when you have to get some help, whether you like it or not.

With that in mind, here are a few creative child care ideas you can consider when and if the need arises:

Get your husband or spouse to help. If you are running a wedding planning business or freelance interior designing, usually you have to meet clients to discuss over the details. You can schedule the appointment later in the evenings when your husband or spouse is back from work. Get his help to watch over the kids for a couple of hours. Better yet, send your husband and kids to the movies for a bonding session while you meet clients for work at an adjacent coffeehouse. Then, meet up after the meeting and movie is over for an ice-cream session.

Form a childcare network. Get to know other work at home mothers in your neighborhood and build a rapport with them. Then, suggest forming a childcare network. Each work at home mum can spare a certain amount of time a week, say 1pm to 3pm on a Monday for Work At Home Mum One, in her schedule to babysit other work at home Mums' kids. If you have to meet a supplier, then schedule it on a Monday at 1pm and drop off your kids at the Work At Home Mum One's home while you go off dealing with work. Anyone who needs a babysitter on that particular day can drop their kids off at Work At Home Mum One's home as well.

Hire a local high school student as a sitter. If your home based business does not require you to leave your home, you can hire a local high school student to come over and play with your kids while you work in your home office. This allows you some quiet and uninterrupted time to make important phone calls or send out urgent emails to customers, suppliers and the like. If anything unfortunate happens, you are just ten feet away and your kids will not dare to cause a racket knowing that you are just in the next room.

Enroll your kids in art classes, ballet classes, bible study and so on. This gives you the flexibility to run work errands and meet clients and suppliers while your kids are learning new skills and making new friends. You can check your local library, community center or place of worship for free or low costing classes. In the end, you can get important work done and your kids will learn a new trade at the same time.

One important tip to remember no matter which creative child care option you choose is to always run a background check on the people whom you are entrusting your kids to. Make sure they are trustworthy, reliable and will not harm your kids in any way. It might be helpful to ask around for recommendations on sitters from your close and trusted friends. Also, look around the surroundings and make sure the environment feels safe. If you have any bad feelings towards a particular sitter, then trust your instincts.

By: Stella Parks

About the Author:
